The use of phrases like ‘pregnant people’ or ‘penis owners’ in cultural or political discourse can be confusing or anger some. People question why these terms are used when ‘only women can get pregnant’ or ‘only men have penises’. The use of gender-neutral language acknowledges that sex doesn’t always align with gender identity. It is an inclusive and streamlined way to refer to everyone with certain anatomy or biological abilities. Gender is a social construct whereas sex is based on biological characteristics. The linguistic shift towards gender-neutral language has been increasing over the last two decades. These changes also acknowledge intersex people and the diverse ways gender-diverse individuals affirm their gender identity. It is not just a matter of inclusivity but also medical accuracy, as labeling people by their anatomy allows for more comprehensive healthcare. Various medical associations support the use of gender-neutral terms. The use of broader language aims to include marginalized groups and make them feel seen and recognized. Acceptance through verbalizing and using gender-inclusive language can be life-saving for transgender and nonbinary individuals. It allows for easier discussions and recognition of their experiences.
